Macleay Island is an island in Moreton Bay and makes up a town and locality within Redland City. It is an island that is rich in history of the Aboriginal peoples’ lives as evidenced by the middens and stone fish traps that can still be found in the area.
As of 2016, the island had a population of 2681 people.
It is 6.5 km long and 4 km wide, making it the fourth largest island in Moreton Bay. A causeway connects Macleay Island to Perulpa Island.
Macleay Island offers a wide range of shops, including cafes and restaurants, and supermarkets. With its beautiful sandy beaches and mangrove foreshores, the island is perfect for picnic, swimming, sailing and other outdoor recreational activities. It offers recreational facilities for golfing, bowling and boating.
A community of artists calls Macleay Island home, and the Arts Centre serves painters, potters, etc.
The island is surrounded by nature that includes littoral rainforest, rocky shores, sandy beaches, mangroves and views to the mainland, over to North Stradbroke Island and up to Moreton Island. Every year, it is visited by various birds, including migratory birds.
Macleay Island’s beautiful natural environment, including forests, mangroves and beaches, afford residents a relaxing and peaceful lifestyle. However, these environments are also the ideal places for many kinds of pests to thrive, including termites, mosquitoes and rodents.
Rodent population has exploded in recent years, which is alarming because of the potential damage to property and health they can cause. There are many reasons why rodents seek food, shelter and water. They will usually crawl indoors due to extreme weather. Rats and mice will sneak inside buildings through tiny holes.
Rodents live in groups, so if you see one, it’s likely that there are more that you don’t see. Rodents breed fast. A couple of rodents can grow into a whole family in just a few weeks. Thus, it is important to seek the help of professional pest control companies with the knowledge and tools to treat rodent infestation.
Some species of rats and mice carry bacteria that cause diseases, such as leptospirosis, plague, typhus and more. The best way to keep your health and property safe is to keep mice and rats away from your home.
Cases of food poisoning can be traced to cockroach infestation, and in some cases, it can lead to serious diseases. Cockroaches have been around for millions of years and they have evolved in such a way that it’s difficult to eliminate them. It is even said the cockroaches can survive anything, even a nuclear attack.
Cockroaches can usually be found in places where there are plenty of food and water. There are various species of cockroaches found in Australia, each different in sizes, colours and shapes. The most common types of cockroaches are German cockroaches, American cockroaches, Australian cockroaches, Oriental cockroaches, Brown Banded cockroaches and Smoky Brown cockroaches.
The things that attract cockroaches are dirty dishes in the sink, food and water, moisture and garbage bin. Eliminate these things or at least handle them properly to keep cockroaches away.
There are many species of ants, with some species delivering extremely painful bites. They can also contaminate your food with pathogens. Ants can also damage your property structure and belongings.
The species of ants that can potentially invade your property are Asian needle ants, Crazy ants, Carpenter ants, Argentine ants and Dark Rover ants. Some signs of ant infestation include ant nest in your backyard or inside your home; a rushing sound inside the walls, ceiling or beneath the floors; and piles of wood shaving beneath wooden items.
Ants are tiny that they can enter through the smallest gaps in your home. Once they are inside, they can be anywhere, especially where food and water are easily accessible. To prevent ant infestation, keep your food stored properly. Ants can eat anything, with different species preferring sweets, meat, fats or oils.
A spider appearance is enough to frighten just about anyone, so having these insects in your home is unpleasant. They spin webs, which makes your home look dirty and ugly. But a major reason to avoid a spider infestation is because some species deliver bites that are poisonous.
Fortunately, the spiders that are usually found in homes are harmless. However, to an untrained eye, it’s difficult to distinguish between a non-venomous and venomous spider. This is where calling help from professional pest control specialists is important.
These are the species of spiders that you will usually encounter: White-tailed spiders, Black-house spiders, Brown-house spiders, Daddy long-legs, and Funnel-web spiders. Unclean environments will attract spiders because these places also attract other bugs and insects, which are food for spiders.
Spiders will settle in untouched places where they will not be seen and there is no danger for them.

If you have seen a silvery-coloured insect on your bookshelves, those are silverfish. These pests love to feed on starchy materials like books, papers, etc. Getting rid of them is not quite easy because not only can they move fast, but they can also multiply quickly.
Silverfish prefer dark, damp places such as bathrooms, sinks, kitchens, attics and basements. These nocturnal, wingless insects have flat bodies, which make them excellent creepers and hiders that can squeeze into the smallest cracks and crevices in your house.
Termites can cause extensive damage to your property that require expensive repairs. Dealing with a termite infestation can be headache because their colonies are extensive that eliminating them is very difficult.
There are various types of termites namely: Conehead termites, Dampwood termites, Subterranean termites, Drywood termites and Formosan termites. The most destructive are the subterranean termites as they eat wood non-stop. This means these termites can cause a structure to collapse in a short period of time. If you see mud flats near your property, it could be a sign of subterranean termite infestation.
Properties in Queensland are vulnerable to termite infestation because the state is in the high-risk zone for termite attacks. If your residence has low access to sunlight, it is more vulnerable to termite infestation because they thrive in dark and damp places.
