Pest Control in Amity

Amity is a rural town in Redland City, located on the north western point of North Stradbroke Island (or Amity Point).

The Quandamooka people, the traditional owners of the area, call it Pulan Pula.

As of the 2016 Census, Amity had a population of 387 people.

Due to the very small size of the town, there are very few infrastructures in Amity. Thus, residents have to either drive to Dunwich for health and school services, or ride the ferry or board to the mainland of Redlands.

The only public buildings are a single jetty, the Amity Point Library, a community hall, a fire station and a post office. There are only 18 roads in this small town, with Claytons Road (or Point Lookout Road) as the only road providing access to Amity from the rest of the island.

The private infrastructures were built to cater to the large number of tourists who flock to the island during the holiday season. There is a caravan park for the budget travellers as well as the cricket club, which caters to both local and non-local tourists.

Amity is every nature-lover’s dream as it is surrounded by subtropical forests to the south east and beautiful beaches elsewhere. Despite the fact that most of the area is made up of sand, Amity’s virgin forests boast of wide variety of plant and animal life.

The beaches remain untouched, despite the erosion by the rainbow channel. Amity Point is home to some of the largest population of sharks in the world, but luckily, shark attacks are rare.

Potential Risks for Pest Infestation

Redlands and its suburbs, including Amity, features a beautiful natural environment, with pristine beaches and diverse flora and fauna. But this same environment attracts pests, some harmless and other destructive.

While living in Amity is relaxing and peaceful, residents should also remain vigilant about potential pests that might invade their peaceful existence. Ants, spiders, termites, and other pests are potential threats that residents should be aware of all the time.

Cockroach Control in Amity

Cockroaches are a health hazard, whether it is small cockroaches in your home or large cockroaches that came from outside.

Cockroaches have been on earth for millions of years. They have evolved in such a way that they cannot be easily eliminated. According to scientists, cockroaches have become adaptable that they would be able to survive a nuclear attack.

They usually set up home in an area where food and water is easily accessible. Using insect sprays will only kill the cockroaches that you see, but not the ones hiding in dark, moist places in your home.

The types of cockroaches that are common in Australia are German cockroaches, American cockroaches, Australian cockroaches, Oriental cockroaches, Brown banded cockroaches and Smoky Brown cockroaches.

Mosquito Control

Mosquitoes are very common in Redlands City because of our sub-tropical climate and the presence of coastal mangrove swamps. Controlling mosquitoes is important not only to become comfortable again in using your backyard but to protect yourself and your family against serious, or worst, fatal diseases.

Homeowners tend to address mosquito problems with commercial insect sprays. This can work for a while, but when the mosquito population goes out of hand, it becomes difficult to deal with.

Adult mosquitoes can usually be found around their breeding spots, which are still or slow moving water where the females lay their eggs. The first step in mosquito control is eliminating their breeding spots, which include pot plants, ponds and water features, drains and gutters, rainwater tanks, swimming pools, and site drainage.

Spider Removal in Amity

A lot of people don’t like seeing spiders in their properties. Because some species bite, it’s important to be careful. Other spiders don’t bite, just spin webs, which look unsightly.

For spider treatment, it is important to know the species, which all have different hiding spots and different habits. Spiders can be broadly grouped into two: web building spiders (redback and black house spiders) and hunting spiders (huntsman and white-tailed spiders).

Webbing spiders are easy to get rid of because they usually take cover in crevices and have webs that you can see. Hunting spiders, on the other hand, don’t build webs so it’s much harder to find their hiding places.

The most dangerous species of spiders, which is found in Australia, are the funnel webs. Redbacks also give a nasty bite. Immediate medical attention is critical if you have been bitten by a spider.

Rodent Control in Amity

Rodents are difficult to control. Treatment will only be effective through knowledge of the rodent that is causing the problem, apply the appropriate solution and correct the problem that allowed the pests to enter the property.

Rats and mice are nocturnal animals. They feed on a variety of human food and are more than happy to stick around a particular property if there is sufficient food and water sources.

These unwanted guests disturb people’s activities, cause physical damage to personal belongings and buildings, consume and contaminate our food, and make noise, often in the dead of the night.

Rodents are also associated with various diseases such as salmonella poisoning, typhus, leptospirosis, and more. These diseases are spread either directly via contact with rats or through the ticks and fleas they carry.

There are three species of rodents that are common in homes and commercial buildings: common mouse, the roof rat (or black or shop rat) and brown rat (Norway or sewer rat). Rodents breed fast, so their population can go out of control in a short span of time. So it is important to take action immediately, if you just see a rat/mice or two.

Ant Control

Generally, ant problems happen in three areas: inside the home, around the perimeter of the home, and in the lawn.

Certain species of ants build their nest inside the home, including the roof voids and wall cavities, which are warm, dry and safe. Ants around the perimeter of the home don’t become a problem until they invade your outdoor entertainment area or build nest under pavers.

The common species of ants that can cause problems in lawns across the Redlands and Brisbane areas are funnel ants and green headed ants. Green ants can give a very painful bite, with some people even developing severe allergic reactions. Funnel ants build their extensive nests beneath the earth, where they feed on aphids attached to grass roots.

Dealing with ants can be frustrating, as they seem to appear out of nowhere and in great numbers. Ant control is difficult because of their nest structure, behaviour and large numbers. Using insect spray might kill the ants that you see, but it will not eliminate the nest, which means ants will return.

Termite Control in Amity

One of the best features of South East Queensland is its beautiful, tropical climate. Unfortunately, this is the type of environment where termites thrive the most. This is why having a termite inspection at least once a year is important.

A termite infestation is both financially and emotionally draining. They are capable of extensive damage, which could cost thousands of dollars’ worth of repairs. It is common to find these destructive pests in both new and old properties. This is why a regular annual termite inspection is important, especially in termite-appealing places like Brisbane and the Redlands.

Termites’ food preferences include paper, wood, books, cardboard, filtration systems and insulations. They also love woody plants like shrubs.

If you find a termite nest or termites in your home, the first thing you must do is don’t disturb them. Call a professional pest control company immediately to inspect your home and recommend the most effective method to get rid of the termites.

If you are building a new home, renovating or buying a home in Amity, you will need to consider what termite prevention solutions are available. Our company offers all types of solutions including physical and chemical barriers as well as reticulation systems. You can reach us on

Amity Termite Hazard Level

High – Very High Risk

Termite Hazard Level Gauge image

According to the Interim Termite Hazard Map by CSIRO, the Redlands area, where Amity is located, is in the high-risk category for termite infestation.

Because Amity is close to the sea, the area is a good target by drywood termites, which need high moisture content in the timber they attack.

Throughout Queensland, the most commonly found termites are Subterranean termites and Drywood termites.

The West Indian drywood termite, is the world’s most destructive drywood termite. It is the culprit to massive economic damage to timber houses in Queensland, including properties in Amity.

  • A coastal environment like Wynnum is prone to termite and vermin attacks.

  • The number one thing that attracts termites is water or moisture. It is almost a guarantee that if a home has water leakage problems, it will soon be invaded by termites, if it hasn’t been already.

  • Damage to homes, whether made from weatherboard, is likely if termites, or white ants, are left unchecked.
