Ashmore is an inner-city suburb in the Gold Coast, located about km from Surfers Paradise. It is one of the residential suburbs in the Gold Coast with a diverse range of dwellings, from acreage to villas.
It had a population of 11,910 people as of 2016.
Thanks to its central location, between Southport and Benowa, Gold Coast beaches, the central business district, the Pacific Motorway and the rail link are easily accessible from the suburb.
Ashmore features undulating hills that give homes beautiful views of Surfers Paradise, the hinterlands, as well as the Royal Pines Golf Course.
The suburb offers a family-oriented lifestyle mixed with a solid retiree population. It is close to shops, good schools and other essential amenities.
The beautiful suburb of Ashmore with its diverse range of dwellings can also experience pest problems. The very environment and climate that attracted local residents to the area is also the perfect breeding ground for many harmful pests such as termites, mosquitoes, rodents, and more.
Some species of termites are attracted to wood with a high moisture content. This means if you live in a high-risk zone for termites like the Gold Coast, a small water leak from a shower can be serious.
An established colony can house as many as two million termites, most of which are workers whose function is to forage for food for the colony. A colony can grow very quickly because the queen of some species can produce up to 2000 eggs per day.
The species that tend to cause the most damage is the subterranean type, which nests in places such as trees, stumps or discarded timber. The travel from the colony to various places by tunnelling underground.
If termites find their way into a home without the owner noticing, the house becomes the food source for them. If left unnoticed, termites can cause significant damage in a short period of time.
Wasp bites can be painful and serious to people who develop an allergic reaction. If you spot a wasp or wasps in your vicinity, chances are there is a nest nearby.
It is important to treat a wasp nest early but removing their nest can be dangerous. Don’t attempt to remove the aps nest yourself. Being disturbed will provoke the wasps inside to attack in defence of their home.
Contact a pest control specialist to effectively and safely remove the wasp nest from your property.
Ants are highly social and well-organized. They are very common that it is estimated that the possibly comprise 15-25% of all total land-based animals. Only Antarctica and other non-inhabited islands have no ants. These bugs have been on earth for a long time, as evidenced by their fossils dating back to the Early and Late Cretaceous periods.
Most ants are omnivorous, which means they will eat just about anything. They are industrious insects that will travel a long distance to hunt for food and carry it back to the colony. And, if there is anything that can be considered as food, ants will find it and bring it back home.
It’s challenging to deal with ants because of their diverse subspecies. Queensland has the honour of being home to the largest number of subspecies in the world. The most common species you will find in Queensland include Carpenter Ants, Caribbean Crazy Ants and Fire Ants.

Cockroaches are hardier than other insects, thanks to their excellent adaptability. They can survive any environment, from super cold to searing hot. Cockroach can also eat just about anything, including dead cockroaches, old food and paper. They carry pathogens that causes diarrhea, vomiting, cholera, leprosy, dysentery, etc.
Some of the common cockroaches in Queensland include the German cockroach, American cockroach and Australian cockroach. Not all cockroaches are considered as pests.
In Australia, there are more than 450 subspecies of cockroaches. Though they can’t tolerate cold temperatures, some subspecies have their own ant-freeze that allows them to survive temperatures of up -122 degrees C.
Cockroaches like damp and dark areas, so take care to keep your pantry, basement, bathroom and kitchen clean and tidy.
Spiders have a bad reputation, despite the fact that they play an important role in our ecosystem. Most of the species of spiders in Australia are not considered as pests. They only become a problem if species that spin webs invade your home.
Spiders generally keep to themselves and will avoid humans as long as possible. You will most likely encounter any of these species of spiders: Mouse spider, Redback Spider and Harvestman Spider. Mouse spiders are dark brown to black in colour; the Redback has a unique red marking on its back; and the Harvestman spiders are brown and cream in colour.
The most common spiders are generally nonaggressive. The spiders with venom in their bites are the funnel web, redback and white-tail varieties. The most vulnerable from spider bites are children and the elderly, so it is important to take all spider bites seriously.
Rodents are small and cute, but they can cause a lot of damage to your property and to your health, if they’re ignored. They are gnawing mammals, and their order includes mice and rats. Rodents are mostly herbivores and omnivorous, they will eat just about anything.
The most common types of rodents include the Black Rat and the Brown Rat. The Brown Rat burrows and climbs to travel. Cereal is their preferred food. Brown Rats are good swimmers and are generally active at night and at dusk. The Black Rat is an excellent climber. They eat mostly moist food. Black Rats are also nocturnal and often live in large groups.
Silverfish are not fish, but rather they have a fish-like body and are silver in color, in general. These small, wingless insects are mostly active at night and prefer dark, humid areas.
They hide their presence from humans, which they can do effectively because can scurry into places quickly. Silverfish can usually be found in the basements, attics and other places that are wet or humid.
Silverfish don’t bite but they can be destructive. They feed on materials that contain starches and dextrin such as book bindings, wallpapers, photos and carpets. These have adhesives that are food for silverfish.
Though they don’t spread diseases, silverfish can contaminate food. They can do without food for a year or they will feed on alternative items like synthetic fibre.

Because Ashmore is close to the sea, the area is a good target by drywood termites, which need high moisture content in the timber they attack.
Throughout Queensland, the most commonly found termites are Subterranean termites and Drywood termites.
The West Indian drywood termite, is the world’s most destructive drywood termite. It is the culprit to massive economic damage to timber houses in Queensland, including properties in Ashmore .
