Bilinga is a southern coastal suburb in the Gold Coast, located on the boundary with New South Wales.
As of 2016, there were 1,804 residents in Bilinga.
Located between Tugun and Kirra, Bilinga offers a mix of local residences and holiday apartments.
Its main feature is the seemingly never-ending beach that stretches from Currumbin to Kirra and all the way to Coolangatta. This beach is very peaceful and is often deserted except for the occasional local resident or guest staying in nearby accommodations.
Bilinga is quite a small suburb. A narrow strip of housing (the only residential area in the suburb) is located immediately inland from the beach.
Bilinga is home to the Gold Coast Airport (formerly the Coolangatta Airport), which tales up most of the area. It is also home to the Gold Coast Desalination Plant, located in the north-west of the Bilinga.
Here are the types of potentially problematic pests in the suburb of Bilinga.
Cockroaches are common resident and commercial pests, usually found in the kitchens, food handling areas, toilets, bathrooms and laundry areas. They carry germs and bacteria that cause various diseases such as dysentery, diarrhea, salmonella, and more.
They are mostly active at night and are usually found crawling around cupboards, draw hinges, cracks, crevices, under or behind large appliances, and stored products and boxes.
These scavengers love meats, starches, sugars and fatty foods. However, they can eat other types of foods such as glue, leather, soap, toothpaste, dead skin, hair and dead cockroaches.
In Australia, there are roughly 1,300 known ant species. The most common ants found in the Gold Coast and Northern NSW are: Black House Ant, Bull Ant, Coastal Brown Ant, Funnel Ant, Fire Ant, Green Ant, Ghost Ant and Sugar Ant.
Ants forage for food, which includes sweets, grease, oils, vegetables, honeydew and other insects. They carry food back to their colony, which can range in size from a few to hundreds of thousands of ants, including the king and queen.
The most common wasps in the Gold Coast and Northern NSW are solitary and social wasps such as Yellow Jackets, Hornets, Paper Wasps and Mud-daubers. Wasps like Mud-daubers are beneficial to the environment because they help control the population of spiders and other bugs and are excellent pollinators.
However, wasps can deliver an extremely painful sting if they or their nest are threatened. The sting can lead to redness of the skin around the affected area and some people can develop allergic reactions, which can require immediate medical attention.

Mosquitoes, the female ones, suck blood to help their reproductive functions. Their bite can be deadly as it carries pathogens to the hosts that can lead to various diseases such as malaria, dengue, Ross River virus, and more.
The females lay their eggs in stagnant water such as containers, drains, ponds, pools, puddles in garden and parks, and even items outside the home that can hold water such as bird baths, rain gutters, old tyres, etc. One of the simplest and effective ways to prevent mosquito infestation is to eliminate standing water around your property.

Termites, or white ants, are social insects that live in colonies. Anything made of wood or timber is not safe with termites because they eat cellulose, which are generally found in wood. Termites have very strong jaws, allowing them to chew through other materials to access wood, such as plastic and even metal.
The species of termites found in the Gold Coast are subterranean termites and drywood termites. Subterranean termites cause most of the property damage in Australia. Identifying species of termites can be a challenge even for experienced pest control professionals. Identification often relies on the features of the soldier caste.
Drywood termites tend to live in drywood and usually build their nests inside structures. They are not identified with mud tube-building, so they are a lot harder to detect.
In general, there are two types of spiders that are found in the home: ground dwelling spiders and webbing spiders. The ground dwelling spiders, usually found in SE Queensland and northern NSW include Funnel-web spiders, Huntsman spiders, Garden Wolf spiders, Mouse spiders, Trapdoor spiders, and White-tailed spiders.
Webbing spiders include St Andrew’s Cross spiders, Weaving spiders, Redback Spiders, Daddy-long Legs, Black House Spiders, Cupboard spiders, Garden Orb, Golden Orb and Silver Orb Weaving Spiders. These spiders typically spin their webs around gutters, corners, curtains, windows, railings and light fixtures.
Most spiders are harmless, but there are a few that venomous. A person that has been bitten by a poisonous spider must immediately seek medical attention, and not wait for the symptoms to appear.
Rodents can eat just about anything and would be content to live around buildings and structures that offer many nesting areas and where food and water are in abundance.
They are unwanted guests as they cause physical damage to buildings and personal properties as well as contaminate food. They also spread several diseases such as typhoid, salmonella, leptospirosis, etc. These diseases are transmitted either by direct exposure to rodents, contaminated food, or via the fleas or ticks they carry.
With their ability to multiply quickly, their population can get out of control easily. When you spot a rodent or signs of their presence, implement a rodent control treatment immediately with the help of professional pest control specialists.

High – Very High Risk
According to the Interim Termite Hazard Map by CSIRO, the Gold Coast area, where Bilinga is located, is in the high-risk category for termite infestation.
Because Bilinga is close to the sea, the area is a good target by drywood termites, which need high moisture content in the timber they attack.
Throughout Queensland, the most commonly found termites are Subterranean termites and Drywood termites.
The West Indian drywood termite, is the world’s most destructive drywood termite. It is the culprit to massive economic damage to timber houses in Queensland, including properties in Bilinga.
