Arundel, a suburb of the City of Gold Coast, is located immediately west of Labrador and about 5 km north-west of Southport.
According to the 2016 Census, Arundel had a population of 10,246 people.
It is bordered to the west by the Coombabah Creek, which, together with other wetlands, has produced amazing open spaces, including a conservation park, golf course and neighbourhood parks.
Arundel is a relatively new suburb, having just been established in the mid-1980s and then officially named in 1989. It has developed mostly as a series of housing estates. The dwelling types are mostly detached homes, and the rest are townhouses.
One of its main features is the Coombabah Lake Conservation Park, bounded by Coombabah Creek and next to the Ivan Gibbs Wetlands Reserve in Coombabah. Another is the Biggera Creek Dam, which is used for flood control.
Arundel has established neighbourhoods and are well services by public transportation, schools and shopping centres. Bike trails, walkways and picnic spots are scattered throughout,
The homes are predominantly brick and tile, with balanced mix of bungalows and two-story houses.
The Gold Coast, in general, and Arundel, in particular, is a great place to live. Great weather. Beautiful natural environment. Lots of amenities. Safe neighbourhoods. But what makes the suburb a great place is what also attracts problematic pests such as termites, ants, mosquitoes, etc.
Termites live in colonies and feed on dead plants, dead trees, and wood. They are capable of causing extensive damage to a property or business, resulting in an expensive repair bill.
With termites, prevention is always better than cure. Part of being proactive is having a termite inspection carried out annually, especially for homes that are located on the Gold Coast because Queensland offers a climate that is ideal for termites.
There are thousands of species of termites. In Gold Coast, there are two common types: Subterranean termites and Drywood termites. Subterranean termites, also called white ants, are highly destructive and need to connect with the soil as a source of moisture. Drywood termites don’t require soil and live in galleries within timbers.
Cockroaches are hardy insects that are common in human dwellings and commercial buildings. There are thousands of cockroach species, but only four are considered as common pests.
Each species prefers either a cold or warm location. The species that inhabit tropical areas like Southeast Queensland are of the larger variety. The common cockroach species in the area are German cockroach, American cockroach, Brown banded cockroach and Australian cockroach.
The most likely time to see a cockroach is at night in your kitchen. Cockroaches are scavengers who depend on human’s neglect of their surroundings and survive on food that is left behind.
Rodent infestation should be addressed immediately to prevent the spread of serious diseases. Rats and mice are known to be the cause of a number of diseases, including Salmonellosis, Leptospirosis, Tularaemia, etc.
These diseases can be acquired through rodent bite and consuming food or liquid that has been contaminated by rats or mice with their droppings, urine, etc. Harmful pests such as fleas, ticks and mites can also enter your home via these rodents.
Aside from diseases, rodents can also cause damage to property with their habit of constant gnawing. They chew on anything including wires, which can result in electrical fires and property destruction.

Ants, in general, are not harmful, until you discover that your home has been turned into their nesting site. Ants live in colonies, and one colony is home to thousands of ants. It is tricky to remove these nests from pavement crevices, wall or ground.
There are many different species of ants, and each of them have unique traits, habits, nesting sites and food preferences. You have to know what species has invaded your home in order to implement the right treatment. And this can only be a job for a professional pest control specialist.
These blood-sucking insects can spread deadly diseases, including the Ross River virus, Dengue fever, Malaria, Barmah Forest virus, and more.
The Gold Coast’s hot, wet climate of the ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. They thrive in areas with watery environment, from canals to swamps and including home gardens, where water collect in pot plant saucers, roof gutters, bird baths, old tyres, etc.
Only the female mosquitoes feed on blood, which they need before producing eggs. Their eggs are usually laid on stagnant water. Adult males have a short life cycle and feed mostly on plant secretions.
A typical mosquito treatment will entail misting the grass, vegetation and the entire exterior of the home, including under eves, decks and patios. This will require the experience and tools that only pest control experts can offer.
Spiders are another insect common in Australia. Some species are generally harmless, but others are lethal. All spider bites must be taken seriously and treated with proper medical attention.
Some of the common types of spiders in the Gold Coast include Daddy Long Legs, Huntsman, Black House Spider, White-tailed Spider, Redback Spider, and Northern Rivers Funnelweb.
There are thousands of species of wasps, and a significant portion of them do not attack people or invade human habitat. The types of wasps that you may encounter in the Gold Coast include Common Wasps, German Wasps, Norwegian Wasps, Tree Wasps, Red Wasps, Cuckoo Wasps, Hornets and Honeybee.
If you notice wasps around your property, don’t attempt to remove their hive, if you find it. Hire a professional pest control company to do the wasp treatment safely and effectively.

High – Very High Risk
According to the Interim Termite Hazard Map by CSIRO, the Gold Coast area, where Arundel is located, is in the high-risk category for termite infestation.
Because Arundel is close to the sea, the area is a good target by drywood termites, which need high moisture content in the timber they attack.
Throughout Queensland, the most commonly found termites are Subterranean termites and Drywood termites.
The West Indian drywood termite, is the world’s most destructive drywood termite. It is the culprit to massive economic damage to timber houses in Queensland, including properties in Arundel.
