The suburb is mostly residential, except the southernmost part where Mercer Park and Shaw Park are located. Most homes are 40 or more years in age with a huge proportion built from bricks and tiles on block sizes of more than 500 sq m.
Wavell Heights is elevated, so many parts have city views and access to cooling breezes during the summer. The low-lying areas are prone to flooding.
Insects, rodents and other pests also cause significant worries to residents and business owners in Rochedale. These pests may be small in size, but they can cause major damage to health and property.
Termites date back more than 100 million years ago to the Cretaceous period. Also known as “white ants,” termites help in the recycling of organic matter and nutrients back to the soil. However, they are considered one of the most destructive pests in human habitats. There are three types of termites: Subterranean termites, Drywood termites and Dampwood termites. These wood-feeding pests avoid light and rarely comes out in the open. This is why once termites attack a property extensive damage (and costly) has been done before it is discovered.
There are many species of spiders. The most common species that we see include the very large Huntsman, which sneaks in under the door and crawl around under the furniture, and Red back, which usually live around the buildings and very venomous. Other species can be found in the foliage in your garden and on the exterior of buildings. People should stay away from poisonous spiders. And for those that are harmless, the problem is that their webs can be a messy sight and render a place unhygienic.
If you’ve ever heard a noise or something scurrying around your roof, it is most likely from rodents. Rodents will begin to look for somewhere to stay during autumn and winter, which is also their breeding season. It’s not smart to ignore rodents because they can multiply quickly and in abundance. A female can breed as many as 15 baby rodents twice a year. They leave their droppings everywhere and they can spread various diseases by contaminating food or utensils with their feces or urine.
Aside from being a nuisance around your gardens, ants can also invade your home and build a colony in the roof and wall cavities. The most common ant species are the Black Ants and Coastal Brown Ants. Green Ants build nests in the gardens and have painful bites. Black Ants will nest in wall cavities and in ceilings. You will see in on bench tops in search of food. Brown Ants nest in soil and you will see them along pathways, gardens and the foundation of outer walls. These ants love sunny, dry areas to nest, but will nests above ground if soil is available. Green Ants will leave dirt mounds around gardens, paths and lawns. They bite, paintfully, when they’re disturbed or threatened.
Wasps can be aggressive when disturbed. They sting in defense, and this small sting can be extremely painful, and life threatening to those who develop an allergic reaction. If you see a wasp nest in your property, don’t attempt to remove it yourself. You could be swarmed by hundreds of angry wasps and sting you many times. This dangerous job should only be done by a professional.
Cockroaches are one of the dirtiest pests in existence, highly resilient that make them hard to eliminate, and can spread various diseases. They forage for food in trash bins, feces and other nasty places. It’s not good to have cockroaches in your home, crawling all over your food, kitchen tools, toothbrushes, and more, as you could end up with health problems.
