Ferny Grove is an outer north-western residential suburb in the City of Brisbane, with 5,725 residents as of 2016.
It is located 15 km north-west of the Brisbane CBD and home to eight parks occupying 13% of the suburb’s total area. Prior to its transformation as a residential suburb, it was mainly industrial, with a claypit and tile plant, located south of the railway station.
Ferny Grove is a family-friendly leafy suburb offering excellent outdoor activities, including the 1.8 km Ferny Grove Rail Trail, multiple bike paths and the Ferny Grove Aqua Park. It lies on the doorstep of Samford Conservation Park and D’Aguilar National Park.
Children can enjoy three popular playgrounds, located in nearby suburbs – Teralba Park in Everton Park, George Willmore Park in Ferny Hills and Upper Kedron Recreation Reserve in Upper Kedron.
Most of the residential properties are free-standing houses. Many of the houses are constructed in the 1970-1980 and are double storey brick houses. It is a nice, peaceful suburb where people can buy a house with a great deal of land.
The beautiful and green suburb of Ferny Grove has its problems relating to various pests. Here are a few of them.
Termites are a major household threat, particularly for houses that are built near bushes or other heavily-wooded areas. While the pose no serious threat to people, their feeding habits do. They feed on cellulose, which is the main component of wood.
Wood is the main building material in many new homes. As a result, termites are attracted to houses, where they will feed on the timber parts. The damage can be minor, requiring a cosmetic repair only, if the termite activity is discovered early. Or, if the termite infestation is overlooked for a long time, a building will suffer a major structural damage, compromising the safety of the entire building.
There are commercial solutions designed for termite prevention, but the best practical approach for homeowners is regular inspection of your property and making sure no wood is close to your house.
There are 1,275 known species of ants in Australia, though there could be more as it is believed that only about 50% of all ant species have been discovered, so far. Ants can be found all around the world, except Antarctica. They are easily recognisable, being one of the most prevalent insects on earth.
Ants are normally active throughout the year, but can hibernate at varying degrees during winter. Generally, ants are one of the more hardworking insects, always looking for food and growing their nest.
Different species of ants are beneficial to the environment, but they can be annoying and unwanted in urban environments. Ant bites when they are threatened, but their bites are generally harmless. They are not a sight that people want to see in their homes because they are unsightly and can spoil food.

Cockroaches are present all-year round but they become less active during the cold months. On a daily basis, cockroaches are nocturnal, so they are most likely to be sighted at night in the kitchen on a warm night. There are three main types of cockroaches that are common in Queensland: German Cockroach, American Cockroach and Australian Cockroach.
Like other insects, cockroaches play an essential role in nature. However, they can be harmful in cities and towns. They are likely to be found in dark, moist areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Cockroaches pose a threat to human health because of the germs and bacteria they carry on their bodies.
Wasps are diverse, with as many as 44,000 distinct species of these insects in Australia. They are most active during spring as they either find shelter or die during the colder months. Wasps tend to bite more during summer and autumn, while the social colonies and solitary wasps are both active.
Their stings are rarely fatal, but they might be people that could develop severe allergic reactions from wasp stings. Wasps and their nest should be avoided because unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times.
The only time that wasps will attack is if they are defending their nest. If you happen to discover a wasp nest, let a professional pest control technician handle the removal and transfer of wasp nest.
Very few species pose a real threat to people as most species tend to avoid human encounters. However, some spiders like the red-back, funnel-web, and mouse spiders, are venomous, and bite victims should seek immediate medical help.
Spiders that don’t bite spin webs that they use to catch prey. They are good at controlling the insect population in your house, but spider webs can make a space/room messy and unhygienic.
Rats and mice, part of the order Rodentia, are the most common rodents that hound residential and commercial properties. Rodent are constant because they use the human population as a source for their food and water.
Rodents carry disease-causing pathogens that present serious health risks to people who come in contact with them. For example, the Black Death, which caused millions of deaths, was thought to have come from rats, or they played a significant role in spreading it.
They also pose a risk to the home if they build a nest in it as they will chew through everything – from wood to electric cables.

High – Very High Risk
According to the Interim Termite Hazard Map by CSIRO, the Brisbane area, where Ferny Grove is located, is in the high-risk category for termite infestation.
Because Ferny Grove is close to the sea, the area is a good target by drywood termites, which need high moisture content in the timber they attack.
Throughout Queensland, the most commonly found termites are Subterranean termites and Drywood termites.
The West Indian drywood termite, is the world’s most destructive drywood termite. It is the culprit to massive economic damage to timber houses in Queensland, including properties in Ferny Grove.
