Austinville is a hinterland suburb in the Gold Coast, covering about 20 sq km. It is located between Mudgeeraba and Springbrook.
The Mudgeeraba Creek flows through the suburb, with the Nimmel Range on the horizon. It also features rainforests, with the southern portion protected within Springbrook National Brook.
As of 2016, it had a population of 356 people.
It started as a banana plantation in 1934, making it one of the oldest suburbs in the Gold Coast. The original settlement was short-lived. Most families left the area, allowing rainforest to grow back. The suburb is still dominated by the surrounding conservation area.
This protected area is a sanctuary to more than 120 species of birds and features a mix of eucalyptus rainforest and the Mudgeeraba Creek.
There are few residents in Austinville, but its environment of mostly rainforest and conservation area, while welcoming to nature lovers, is also attractive to some types of pests such as termites, spiders, ants, etc.
One of the oldest creatures on earth, cockroaches can adapt to any situation and continue to multiply. They are resilient and hard to eradicate. Depending on the species, cockroaches will eat anything from fresh food to scraps to decaying matter, plants, etc.
Only half a dozen of the more than 3,000 species of cockroaches are considered pests because of their ability to co-exist with humans. Most of the cockroaches in Australia are not native. The most common are American Cockroach, Australian Cockroach and German Cockroach.
Cockroach infestation must be avoided because these insects can spread diseases such as Salmonella, Dysentery, and gastroenteritis. Cockroaches can carry bacteria inside them for months. They can pass bacteria to humans through vomit and faeces they transfer to our food.
These tiny insects are probably the most annoying, due to their unpredictable behaviour and their ability to follow other ants to a food source.
There are more than 3,000 types of ants in Australia, and the most common in Southeast Queensland include the Coastal Brown Ant, Black House Ant, Green Ant, and Carpenter Ant. The dry weather compels ants to enter homes in search of food and water.
A significant amount of rain will see ants trying to come inside in search of a dry environment. They are always in search of food, so they will usually be found on floors, benchtops, windows, ovens, skirting, and more.
The most common wasp found in Southeast Queensland is the Paper Wasp. There are several varieties of paper wasps, but they are generally yellow and black or reddish-brown with yellow and black stripes.
Wasps feed on caterpillars, spiders and other insects to feed their young and they also love nectar and any food that is left outside. They usually build their nests in protected locations and will generally be found close by in shrubs and trees, in retaining walls and beneath the eaves of houses or patios.
Though they’re not naturally aggressive, wasps will attack if their hives are disturbed. Wasps will attack in a swarm, which can be dangerous. If you find a wasp nest, don’t attempt to remove it yourself. Call a qualified pest control specialist to do it.

Thousands of species of spiders can be found in Australia; most are harmless, but there are a few that can be poisonous. Take any spider bite seriously by seeking medical attention.
The species that are usually found in the Gold Coast are the Northern Rivers Funnelweb, Redback Spider, White-tailed Spider, Black House Spider, Huntsman and Daddy Long Legs. The venom of the Funnelweb can kill, however, an effective anti-venom is available. The biggest spiders in Australia are the Huntman, which look ferocious but are generally harmless.
If you see one spider, it usually means there are many more that are hiding. Spiders usually hide in dark cracks and crevices, places that humans don’t generally look at. If you see a lot of insects in your home, spiders will be sure to follow. So, don’t leave your windows and doors open to keep spiders away.
Silverfish Treatment in Austinville
Silverfish are tiny, agile insects that can cause significant damage to your home if left unchecked. They feed on glue, book bindings, paper, sugar, textiles and clothes. People usually find out they are dealing with a silverfish infestation by discovering the damage to belongings that they have caused.
These silvery, fish-shaped insects multiply quickly and are very hard to exterminate. If they are not dealt with immediately, they can cause more damage and can make it more expensive to treat them. Silverfish love linen and are known to feed on cotton, linen, silk, leather and rayon.
Rodents live in groups because they are social animals. They enter buildings through tiny cracks and crevices as they search for food and warmth. Rodents tend to come and go but will take up year-round occupancy of a building if there is enough food and water.
One of the obvious signs of rodent presence is gnaw marks on food packages or structures of the house. Gnaw marks can help you identify whether you’re dealing with rats or mice. Bigger gnaw marks will obviously be from the larger teeth of rats.
There are two main reasons why rodents invade buildings – shelter and food. Remove access from these two things and you keep rodents away from your home.
Mosquitoes are a real nuisance, with their constant buzzing and biting. On top of that, they are also dangerous as they are carriers of some of the deadliest diseases known to man.
Only female mosquitoes bite as they need the blood to lay eggs. They are attracted to humans because of the carbon dioxide we exhale. And if you are a Blood Type O, you are more likely to attract mosquitoes compared to people with different blood types.
Adult mosquitoes seek standing water as this is where the female lay their eggs. This is water that has collected in water trays, bird baths, old tyres, etc.
Mosquito population must be controlled because these insects carry harmful disease that are passed on to humans through their bites. These diseases include Murray Valley encephalitis, Ross River virus and Dengue Fever.
These social insects live in colonies that can house up to a million termites. Each occupant plays a role in the colony. There is the queen, whose only job is to lay eggs; the workers that take care of the eggs and search for food; the solder that protect the colony; and the reproductive, which are the future kings and queens that will fly out to build their own colony.
The dominant termite species in Australia is the subterranean termites. These species must be in constant contact with the ground for moisture and protection against predators. Subterranean termites have thin skin, which is why they need moisture. This is also the reason termite attacks occur when there are leaks, dripping taps or poor drainage.
They also need to come above ground for food, so they build mud tubes to allow them to travel and forage for food safely. Their main source of food is wood because of its cellulose. However, other materials are also food for termites, such as paper and cardboard. Despite their size, termites have very strong jaws that allow them to chew through wood.

Because Austinville is close to the sea, the area is a good target by drywood termites, which need high moisture content in the timber they attack.
Throughout Queensland, the most commonly found termites are Subterranean termites and Drywood termites.
The West Indian drywood termite, is the world’s most destructive drywood termite. It is the culprit to massive economic damage to timber houses in Queensland, including properties in Austinville.
