Advancetown is a rural outer town in Gold Coast City, located in the Gold Coast hinterlands. Due to its mountainous terrain, it became the perfect spot for the Hinze Dam, which restrains the Nerang River and Little Nerang Creek to form Advancetown Lake.
It had a population of 482 people as of 2016.
The town is home to two peaks: Mudgeeraba in the south-east and the Pages Pinnacle in the south.
Advancetown enjoys a humid subtropical climate.
On the north, downstream from the dam, the geography is lower and flatter. It features a mix of rural residential areas and rural areas that are mostly grazing on native vegetation. Latimers Crossing, an important landmark in this area, is a crossing point of the Nerang River between the suburb and Gilston.
There are many popular attractions in the suburbs, including the Advancetown Hotel, camping ground, Hinze Dam, Advancetown Lake, and access to neighbouring forests.
With water and forest in the suburb, along with a humid, subtropical climate, Advancetown can be vulnerable to infestation of various pests. Cockroaches, mosquitoes and termites are just some of the harmful and destructive pests that property owners should watch out for.
If your home or commercial space has been infested by cockroaches, what do you do? Cockroaches are difficult to eliminate. In fact, they are known to survive nuclear explosions and extreme radiation.
Pest control specialists do know that cockroaches mould about once a week, which narrows the window of opportunity for eradicating cockroaches. Also, if a pest control treatment was done and not all cockroaches were killed, the remaining cockroaches can establish an immunity to the chemical used due to being previously exposed by a small dose of it.
This immunity can render future cockroach treatment ineffective, and so the use of different pesticide or dosage is called for.
It can be difficult to eradicate ants because of the distance and location of their nest in relation to your property. So how can ants be eradicated?
An effective treatment will depend on identifying the species of ants. Insect sprays are often useless as they can only make the ants disperse and go someplace else to build a new nest.
You may also be dealing with multiple nests. In this case, a bait is the best chance of total eradication. The ants will take the bait to the feed the colony and the entire colony will partake of the offering.
It sounds so simple, but a bait can be complex because it can take many forms because of the food preference of each species of ants. They feed on a range of food, including sweets, meats and fats.

Termites don’t need to be above ground to gain access to buildings. They travel underground to enter your property, and it might be too late before you discover their existence.
Aside from preventative methods, homeowners can benefit from the services of professional pest technicians. They have the termite detection tools and equipment to help them find termite activity and damage, including termite nests within the walls of your home.
Using spider spray around your home’s perimeter will not always provide enough protection from spiders, as these eight-legged creatures will often hang from above or fall from a tree and evade any treatment applied to the ground.
Also, an ordinary spray will affect spiders the way it will the other pests. For one, a spider’s behavior is different from that of an ant or a cockroach. For example, spiders walk differently because most of its body and abdomen are off the ground. Therefore, the most effective treatment is one that would hit their web or the spider itself.
Treatment should also be applied on the garden, mulches and retaining wall cracks and crevices, which tend to be missed. Spiders can hide very well in these areas. Rocks are good hiding places, and you will often discover a spider concealed under them.
If your property is surrounded by bush or vegetation, you can benefit from regular outdoor treatments to reduce spider population.
Mosquitoes are real and constant problem in the Gold Coast area. The state has an ongoing mosquito population mitigation program to ensure public health. Mosquito control is important because these pests carry deadly diseases like the Ross River virus, malaria, dengue fever, and more.
Mosquitoes commonly breed in saltmarsh, as well as freshwater following periods of severe rains. Along the Gold Coast, mosquito breeding can be triggered by the flooding of tidal marshes. This happens every month.
Around properties, mosquitoes can also breed. Their eggs can be found in standing water that has pooled in containers such as bird baths, old tyres, plant pots, etc. Eliminating the water from these vessels will eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.
Eliminating rats or mice from your property requires more than the use of commercial baits, placing them in wall or roof voids and hope that a rodent or two is caught.
The success of rodent control depends on knowing which species is causing the problem, applying the appropriate treatment and fixing the condition that allowed the rats or mice to enter the property.
There are two things you can do to minimise the chances of rodents infesting your property. First, keep your home clean and tidy by putting your garbage in a sealed container and storing food properly. Second, sealing any holes or cracks around your home, getting rid of vegetation around the perimeter of your property, and pruning overhanging branches near your house.
