Tanah Merah takes its name ("red earth" in Malay) from a property the McBride family named in 1952 after the estate they'd left in Malaya, on land first selected by cotton worker George Palk back in 1862.
The suburb wasn't officially named until 1971, and most of its housing dates from the major estate development west of Drews Road between 2001 and 2006. That makes Tanah Merah a mostly younger suburb built on much older land, which is exactly the combination pest control Tanah Merah work needs to account for. Bob Gunn Termite & Pest Control has serviced this part of Logan for 25+ years with our own in-house technicians.

Because most of Tanah Merah's housing stock is relatively recent (largely built in the 2001-2006 estate expansion), pest control Tanah Merah calls are more often about verifying a builder-installed termite system than remediating long-established damage. That said, the suburb sits on land worked since the 1860s, and older pockets closer to the original Loganholme North boundary can carry more established termite pressure. Every termite treatment Tanah Merah and general pest control Tanah Merah visit starts with reading which era a property belongs to.
A suburb built mostly in one decade still has pockets of much older housing stock, and Tanah Merah's boundary with the former Loganholme North area is exactly that kind of pocket. A pest control Tanah Merah provider needs to tell the difference.
Our pest control Tanah Merah service is scoped to the suburb's mostly recent housing stock, with older pockets getting a more thorough inspection where that history calls for it.

More on pre-construction protection →The land that became Tanah Merah was first selected in 1862 by George Palk, who had come to work for the Queensland Co-operative Cotton Company and later chaired the first Tingalpa Divisional Board. The area was originally part of Slacks Creek. Nine decades later, in 1952, Jim and Mave McBride, who'd come from Malaya, named their 176-acre property Tanah Merah after the estate they'd left behind, meaning "red earth" in Malay. The McBrides didn't hold the land long; it was auctioned as a going concern in 1955 and developed by Alan Coles Real Estate. The name wasn't officially gazetted until 1971, and the suburb's built-up character came much later still, with a major housing estate developed west of Drews Road between 2001 and 2006.
That timeline matters for pest control because it means most of Tanah Merah's homes are genuinely recent: built with a builder-installed termite management system that needs checking, not a long history of established activity. But the suburb's boundaries also absorbed what was formerly known as Loganholme North, and properties in those older pockets carry more of the area's 1860s-onward settlement history, with correspondingly more established termite risk.
For homeowners, the practical takeaway is that Tanah Merah isn't a uniform suburb from a pest control standpoint: the 2000s-era estate west of Drews Road needs standard new-build verification, while older streets nearer the former Loganholme North boundary need the fuller assessment an established property requires.
Alongside pest control Tanah Merah, we service the surrounding Loganholme corridor, with termite treatment and general pest control visits scheduled efficiently across neighbouring suburbs.

Yes. New homes get a termite management system at construction, but it needs checking over time, not just installing. We verify the system is intact rather than assuming it's permanent protection.
Yes. Those pockets carry more of the area's older settlement history and generally need a fuller termite assessment than the suburb's mostly 2000s-era housing stock.
It doesn't change the treatment itself, but it explains why the suburb is a mix of very recent housing and older land, which does change what we check and how often.
Standard new-build verification suits most of the suburb's 2000s-era homes; we recommend more frequent, fuller inspections for older properties near the Loganholme boundary.
Yes. We treat ants, cockroaches and spiders common to the suburb's established gardens, alongside termite inspections and treatment.
Cost depends on property age and whether it's a system check or a full treatment. We provide a fixed, written quote after inspection.
Tanah Merah is a residential suburb in the City of Logan, officially named in 1971 but largely built out between 2001 and 2006, with its current boundaries absorbing what was formerly Loganholme North. That mostly recent housing stock, sitting on land worked since the 1860s, is what shapes how we approach every pest control Tanah Merah job.
