Pest Control in Karragarra Island

Karragarra Island is a tiny island in the southern part of Moreton Bay and a town in the City of Redland. It is separated from Russell Island by the Krummel Passage. Measuring about 500 m wide and 2 km long, it is the smallest of the Southern Moreton Bay islands.

It had a population of 204 people according to the 2016 Census.

Since there is no bridge to connect the island, it can only be reached by boat that also offers vehicle and passenger ferry services. A helipad is located on the foreshore park across from 96 The Esplanade.

There is no school in the island. The closest primary schools are located in Macleay Island and Russell Island. The nearest secondary school is in Victoria Point. Students use the ferry to access these schools.

Karragarra Island is mainly residential, but it is a major day trip destination, with a family-friendly beach, barbeque facilities, picnic tables and shady trees. There is no traffic as everything here is within walking distance.

Karragarra Island offers a great getaway destination after a long, busy week. The island is easy to explore either by foot or bike.

Potential Risks for Pest Infestation

Residential and commercial properties in Karragarra Island are at risk of pest infestation. While the town offers a peaceful, idyllic vibe, pests can attack at any time, especially if a property offers what they are in search of – food, water and shelter. Being vigilant and proactive in protecting your property is crucial to keep pests away.

Ant Control in Karragarra Island

Ants are a nuisance in general, but particularly so for a town like Karragarra Island where outdoor activities are a way of life.

There are many different species of ants, not all of the pests. Here are some of the most common species in Karragarra Island: Fire ants, Singapore ants, Black House Ants, Green-headed Ants, Coastal Brown Ants and Carpenter Ants.

One or two ants are harmless, but a multitude of them is another matter. It’s because multiple ants are typically found in unhygienic environments, and they pick up bacteria from those places. When these ants enter your home in search of food, they contaminate the surfaces and food they get in contact with.

Ants sting when they feel threatened. The stings can cause swelling, itchiness and redness on the affected region. Ant infestation may have harmful consequences if not treated immediately.

A severe ant infestation can cause financial losses by damaging your home or office structure. Seeing ants can be unpleasant, which can affect people’s well-being and peace of mind.

Cockroach Treatment in Karragarra Island

Cockroaches are one of the most common pests in Karragarra Island and all over Australia. There are more species of cockroaches in Australia than there are ant species, a testament to these pests highly evolved adaptability.

They can last almost a month without food and two weeks without water. The female cockroach will only mate once but will continue to breed throughout her lifetime. This is the reason why cockroaches breed fast.

Cockroaches are usually found in homes and buildings because they prefer warm places. They also prefer to live where food and water are easily accessible. It’s harmful to have cockroaches living in your space because they carry bacteria that cause diseases and allergic reactions.

There are various species of cockroaches, varying in shape and size. Some of the common cockroaches in Karragarra Island are: American cockroaches, Brown-banded cockroaches, German cockroaches, Oriental cockroaches, Australian cockroaches, and Smoky Brown Cockroaches.

Cockroach infestation brings many harms. Diseases, food contamination and cockroach bites make these pests dangerous and shouldn’t be ignored.

Mosquito Treatment

Mosquitoes are annoying with their constant buzzing and painful bites. Worst, mosquitoes also pose a serious health risk. A mosquito bite can cause deadly diseases, including yellow fever, dengue fever, malaria, etc.

It’s easy to attract mosquitoes because there are many potential breeding grounds in and around your house. Female mosquitoes will lay their eggs in stagnant water sources such as buckets, old tyres, bird baths, etc., air conditioner drip trays, wood piles and tree stumps, trash cans, and more.

Because of this, homeowners are vulnerable to mosquito bites or mosquito-borne diseases. Eliminating stagnant water sources from your property is one effective way of controlling mosquito population in your premises.

Rodent Control in Karragarra Island

Rodents are one of the most destructive pests out there. Being omnivores, rodents will eat just about anything. One of the reasons that brown and black rats can thrive is because they scavenge through food waste, which is an abundant resource, especially in areas with significant human activity.

Most native Australian rats will avoid humans. They prefer to hide underground or in vegetation in the woods. However, there are species (most notably the black rats) that have adapted to co-exist with humans and are no longer threatened by the traps and other extermination solutions.

Rodents are social animals in that they live in groups. They are also nocturnal, which is not common to see a rat or mice scampering around during the day. Seeing a couple of rodents is bad news already because these pests are prolific breeders.

A female can produce up to 24 offspring in a single birth, so rodent population can increase significantly in a few weeks. This makes rodents one of the hardest pests to get rid of them. Though they have weak vision, their keen sense of smell and hearing makes up for this.

Rodent damage can be expensive and life threatening. Their constant gnawing can ruin electrical wiring, which can cause fire. Rodent infestation should be treated immediately to avoid expensive repairs and potential health risks.

Silverfish Treatment in Karragarra Island

Silverfish are tiny, wingless, bluish silver-coloured insects that are mostly active at night. They are shy and will hide their activities from humans. Though they can run or fly, they can run very fast and can easily evade efforts to eliminate them.

Silverfish infestation can happen very quickly because silverfish are prolific breeders. There are several species of silverfish: Lepisma saccharina (the most common silverfish that are silver in colour); Ctenolepisma longicaudata (commonly found in households and dull grey in colour); Acrotelsella Devriesiana (most common species in Australia and brown in colour); and Thermobia domestica (also known as firebrats and golden in colour).

These pests thrive in humidity, which makes human dwellings a perfect place for them. Silverfish feed on with carbohydrates and starch, including old papers, magazines, books, photographs, clothes, and more.

Spider Removal in Karragarra Island

There are over 30,000 species of spiders, most of them are found in Australia. They come in different sizes and colour. Some species spin webs that are elastic and waterproof, while others bite, especially when they feel threatened.

Their bite contains venom, which can cause discomfort, swelling, itching, and even death. Two of the deadliest spiders are the Black Widow and Brown Recluse. Fortunately, no spider bite-related death has been reported in Australia since an anti-venom was developed in the 1980s.

Some of the spider species found in Karragarra island are: White-tailed spiders, Brown House Spiders, Daddy Long Legs, Huntsman Spiders, Black House Spiders and Funnel Web Spiders.

Termite Treatment in Karragarra Island

Termites are notorious for causing major damage to homes and commercial buildings because of their love for wood. They are so common in Australia that it is thought that one in five homes has had or will be infested sooner or later.

There are many different types of termites. Subterranean termites (live underground and known as the most destructive termites); Formosa termites (difficult to eradicate once they have established a colony in an area); Dampwood termites (larger than other species and prefer areas with lots of moisture); and Drywood termites (don’t’ come in contact with soil; usually found in places with lots of deadwood).

Termites can cause millions of dollars in property damage each year. If you suspect termite presence in your property, it is important to call a professional to remove them immediately. As a precaution, it is also beneficial to have regular termite inspection every year.

If you are building a new home, renovating or buying a home in Karragarra Island, you will need to consider what termite prevention solutions are available. Our company offers all types of solutions including physical and chemical barriers as well as reticulation systems. You can reach us on

Karragarra Island Termite Hazard Level

High – Very High Risk

Termite Hazard Level Gauge image

According to the Interim Termite Hazard Map by CSIRO, the Redlands area, where Karragarra Island is located, is in the high-risk category for termite infestation.

Because Karragarra Island is close to the sea, the area is a good target by drywood termites, which need high moisture content in the timber they attack.

Throughout Queensland, the most commonly found termites are Subterranean termites and Drywood termites.

The West Indian drywood termite, is the world’s most destructive drywood termite. It is the culprit to massive economic damage to timber houses in Queensland, including properties in Karragarra Island.

  • A coastal environment like Wynnum is prone to termite and vermin attacks.

  • The number one thing that attracts termites is water or moisture. It is almost a guarantee that if a home has water leakage problems, it will soon be invaded by termites, if it hasn’t been already.

  • Damage to homes, whether made from weatherboard, is likely if termites, or white ants, are left unchecked.
