Pest Control in Brisbane CBD

Colloquially known as the “Brisbane CBD” or “the city”, Brisbane City is the central suburb and the central business district of Brisbane, Queensland’s state capital. It is located on a point on the northern bank of the Brisbane River. Known at its tip as Gardens Point, it tilts upward to the north-west where Brisbane City is bordered by parkland and Spring Hill to the north. It is bordered to the north-east by Fortitude Valley and to the west by Petrie Terrace.

As of the 2016 Census, the city had a population of 9,460 people.

The CBD is dotted with skyscrapers and other buildings, mixed with greenery in the form of parks. Brisbane CBD remains the heart of government and corporate activity, but it’s also becoming a go-to place for excellent pubs, bars, restaurants and community markets.

Being a hub of business activity, residents are few and live a quite a distance from each. The people who do live within the city’s borders reside in apartment blocks. A significant percentage of residents consists of professionals, international students and families – people who choose to compromise on living space in order to be near their work or the major universities around the city.

Potential Risks for Pest Infestation

Even in apartment buildings where most residents of Brisbane CBD reside, pests can be a problem. Probably not termites, but pests who can be transported from outside like ants and flies can be a problem.

Rodent Control

If you’ve found rodent droppings in your pantry and behind your furniture, then you have unwanted guests. The common types of rodents are the Brown Rat and Black Rat.

Rodents can sneak into tiny crevices and extremely narrow pipes. These gnawing mammals can cause damage to health and property, if they’re ignored. Their continuously growing incisors compel them to chew and biting on anything in their path in order to wear down those teeth. They are mostly herbivores and carnivores, so virtually nothing is safe with them. Rodents are adaptable in that they can live in any environments and will easily invade a house or building, if they see an opening – literally!

Ant Treatment

Ants are the epitome are hardworking, but they can also be a pest, especially when they run your BBQ party. The common species of ants are the reddish black Carpenter ants, the black-coloured Caribbean Crazy Ants and red-coloured Fire Ants.

These bugs have an exoskeleton, with elbowed antennae and a node-like structure that forms their waist to separate the two segments of their bodies. Ants can be found all over the world, except Antarctica. Most of them are omnivorous but will eat just about anything.

Spider Treatment

Spiders tend to stay hidden, either crawling about or spinning webs. But in some cases, spiders can make your life and your home miserable. These pests are 8-legged arthropods that have fangs that inject venom into victims and spinnerets that produce silk. Like ants, spiders can be found around the world except Antarctica. They are carnivorous that feed on the prey that gets trap in their webs. Spiders are considered as natural pest controllers because they eat other pests like ants, flies, mosquitoes, etc.

The most common spiders are the Mouse Spider, Red Back Spider and Harvestman Spider. Mouse spiders are dark brown to black in colour and inject venom that is not fatal but the victim will need medical attention. Red Back spiders are black in colour and have a distinctive red marking on their backs The females are larger than the males and can catch prey that are bigger than them. Harvestman spiders are brown or cream in colour. They can climb trees and hunt on the ground.

Cockroach Treatment

A cockroach infestation can spread various diseases and can affect people with allergies. There are different species of cockroaches found in Brisbane: Australia cockroach, American Cockroach, Smoky Brown Cockroach and Oriental Cockroach. These pests multiply very fast because the females will mate only once but will continue to be pregnant throughout their life. They prefer to live warm environments, so they are often found inside homes and buildings. Cockroaches also prefer to live where food and water are easily accessible.

Silverfish Treatment

Silverfish, as the name indicates, is silvery in colour and shaped like a fish. They are often found in the damp and humid parts of your house and will conceal themselves from people. Silverfish can run fast and scurry into various locations. The common places where you can find silverfish are the basements and attics.

TERMITE INFESTATION IN BRISBANE CBD QLD

Brisbane CBD Termite Hazard Level

High – Very High Risk

Termite Hazard Level Gauge image

According to the Interim Termite Hazard Map by CSIRO, the Brisbane area, where Brisbane CBD is located, is in the high-risk category for termite infestation.

Because Brisbane CBD is close to the sea, the area is a good target by drywood termites, which need high moisture content in the timber they attack.

Throughout Queensland, the most commonly found termites are Subterranean termites and Drywood termites.

The West Indian drywood termite, is the world’s most destructive drywood termite. It is the culprit to massive economic damage to timber houses in Queensland, including properties in Brisbane CBD.

  • A coastal environment like Wynnum is prone to termite and vermin attacks.

  • The number one thing that attracts termites is water or moisture. It is almost a guarantee that if a home has water leakage problems, it will soon be invaded by termites, if it hasn’t been already.

  • Damage to homes, whether made from weatherboard, is likely if termites, or white ants, are left unchecked.
